Well, Here we are, it’s almost St. Patrick’s day but we are focusing on songs about working people in the 9:00 portion of our show, since this is the big day for our community. It is the 60th anniversary of the film, “Salt of the Earth” which is about the 1950 – 1952 Empire Mine Strike. The film, like the makers of the film, was blacklasted, apparently the only film that was blacklisted. We encourage any of you out there that are interested, to check out some of the programs here on the KURU website at gmcr.org and listen to some of the interviews on the strike and the film. You can go to the main page and look down the right side until you get to the META section and in there you can click on ‘entries RSS’  and you will find a great interview with Rachel Valencia and another with Dr. Luis Quiñones.
Next week we will be doing more Irish music to honer St. Patrick’s Day and to think about all the immigrants that came across the Atlantic in the holds of ships. Many of them ended up here in the southwest and in Mexico. Some even fought with the Mexican Army, in the Mexican American war (1846 – 1848) and were known as the San Patricio’s.
